The Planes is a sequential drawing by Canadian artist and illustrator Patrick Wong, created in collaboration with Betul and Cloudscape Comics for TransLink's Comics in Transit public art program. Installed at 61st Avenue and Angus Drive in Vancouver, the work was developed from an interview with a Syrian refugee during the refugee crisis around 2016. Her account of hearing fighter jets delivering missiles is juxtaposed with the commercial planes arriving at YVR, transforming the experience into a silent graphic narrative that uses drawing to evoke sound without words. The digital illustrations were printed on translucent paper and presented in a commercial lightbox, transforming the comic page into an illuminated public artwork within an everyday transit environment.
